o The OB ass ciati ns, which are f ssil star f rmati n regi ns, retain the endpr ducts f the star f rmati n pr cess in an pen, un bscured envir nment. Observati ns f the l w-mass stars in OB ass ciati ns pr vide a far clearer picture f the results f the star f rmati n pr cess than d bservati ns f embedded regi ns f ng ing star f rmati n. We review the X-ray and ptical surveys f the f ssil star f rmati n regi ns in the Ori n OB1 ass ciati n. L w-mass pre-mainsequence stars n t nly ab und in the kn wn regi ns f recent star f rmati n but are als distributed ver a much larger v lume. The pre-main-sequence stars have a narr w age spread, and the mass functi n extends d wn t substellar masses. The clustering f pre-main-sequence stars ar und Ori may represent an ev lved versi n f the Ori n Nebula Cluster. We speculate ab ut the effect f the OB envir nment n the initial mass functi n and the f rmati n f planetary systems like the s lar system.

Star formation in unbound giant molecular clouds: the origin of OB associations?
We investigate the formation of star clusters in an unbound GMC, where the supporting kinetic energy is twice as large as the cloud’s self-gravity. This cloud manages to form a series of star clusters and disperse, all within roughly 2 crossing times (10 Myr), supporting recent claims that star formation is a rapid process. Simple assumptions about the nature of the star formation occurring in ...
متن کاملThe Low Mass Stellar Population of the Orion Ob1 Association and Implications for the Formation of Low Mass Stars
The OB associations, which are fossil star formation regions, retain the endproducts of the star formation process in an open, unobscured environment. Observations of the low mass stars in OB associations provide a far clearer picture of the results of the star formation process than do observations of embedded, on-going star formation regions. We review the X–ray and optical surveys of the fos...
متن کاملThe Escape of Ionizing Photons from Ob Associations in Disk Galaxies: Radiation Transfer through Superbubbles
By solving the time-dependent radiation transfer problem of stellar radiation through evolving superbubbles within a smoothly varying H I distribution, we have estimated the fraction of ionizing photons emitted by OB associations that escapes the H I disk of our Galaxy. We considered a coeval star-formation history and a Gaussian star-formation history with a time spread σt = 2 Myr. We find tha...
متن کاملSearch for OB stars running away from young star clusters . I . NGC 6611
N-body simulations have shown that the dynamical decay of the young (∼ 1 Myr) Orion Nebula cluster could be responsible for the loss of at least half of its initial content of OB stars. This result suggests that other young stellar systems could also lose a significant fraction of their massive stars at the very beginning of their evolution. To confirm this expectation, we used the Mid-Infrared...
متن کاملTesting An Identification Algorithm for Extragalactic OB Associations Using a Galactic Sample
We have used a Galactic sample of OB stars and associations to test the performance of an automatic grouping algorithm designed to identify extragalactic OB associations. The algorithm identifies the known Galactic OB associations correctly when the search radius (78 pc) is defined by the observed stellar surface density, which suggests that the sample of Galactic OB associations constitutes a ...
